EMC Storage Software Products #1 in Market Share

With all the talk about unified storage, solid-state drives, and rampant data growth, the impressive performance of the storage software industry has not been overlooked. Compared to the same quarter in 2010, the storage software industry has growth 9.7%, led by key players EMC, Symantec, and IBM.EMC Storage Software
EMC, Symantec, IBM Lead Storage Software Market
The IDC reported Tuesday that, while the disk storage systems market slowed to a more normal growth level, the demand for storage software products remains high. In the third quarter of 2011, revenue from storage software suppliers reached approximately $3.5 billion.
Impressive demand for storage software from vendors like EMC, IBM, and Symantec makes 3Q11 the second-most revenue-generating quarter in 9 years and the second record-setting quarter in 2011. With the greatest percentage of market share, EMC storage software products appear to be dominating the software market:
  • EMC storage software products lead the market with 24.5 % market share.
However, the fight for market share may get more competitive as HP’s acquisition helps them experience the largest growth rate of all suppliers in the report.
  • HP experienced a 38.2 % year-over-year revenue increase in 3Q11, partly due to earlier acquisition of 3PAR.
Storage Software Markets Gain Momentum
The most popular storage software market, data protection and recovery software, accounts for almost 35% of all revenue for the third quarter of 2011.
Although data protection and recovery software bring in the most revenue, the IDC reports that double-digit, year-over-year growth has been seen in 4 out of the 7 functional storage software markets. Archiving software grew by 12.2% year-over-year, while device management software experienced more than 11% year-over-year growth.
